Doing a Mugabe

I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.‘ That’s Voltaire on free speech. I find myself in a bit of a moral bind here, as I agree with that statement and don’t want to add any sub-clauses to dilute the impact. Unfortunately history teaches us that some interest groups will take advantage of this freedom to promote ideas of a society which will remove such basic rights. Also, if you repeat a lie often enough, most people will believe it. When economic hardships put stress on a society, sinister (almost universally right wing), groups attempt to gain power by exploiting discontent and inventing stories about others who are supposed to be to blame. The other route to such groups taking power is military takeovers and violent revolution. The worst people always rise to the top in such situations. Once in power the despot can hold rigged elections to stay in power for decades. Remember, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. If someone in power believes that there is no-one else who could do their job, then they have failed absolutely. Bless Nelson Mandela for showing the proper way.

Currently we are creeping out of a serious recession here in the UK. The biggest single winners in this situation are UKIP (The United Kingdom Independence Party) and their leader, Nigel Farage. Farage poses as a man of the people, and is seen in pubs, drinking a pint of beer and smoking a fag. In reality, he comes from a wealthy family, was privately educated, worked as a commodity broker before going into full-time politics and was involved with right-wing groups since his teenage years. The people supporting UKIP are a strange mixture of the deluded little-Englanders and nasty racists. The aims of the party are to leave the EU and end immigration. The problem with defining who is British is that it always ends up with a discussion of skin colour. We are such a mongrel nation of endless waves of immigrants that only skin colour is the measure for the intellectually lazy. In fact, many recent immigrants are pinko-grey in skin colour and many darker shades have integrated with the British for hundreds of years. Even the name of the party is misleading. They have almost zero support in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scottish Nationalists have their own party, the Welsh have the greatest contempt for little-Englanders and the Northern Irish have their own tribal politics. So let’s call it the deluded little-Englanders party, (DLEP).

Where right wing groups become popular it is usually with the collusion or support of the media. The DLEP are supported unreservedly by the Daily Mail / Mail on Sunday. This newspaper has a long history of promoting fascism. That is not a thoughtless insult, it is meant literally. Don’t believe me? Look it up. My real fear is that DLEP will win seats at the next election, and will form a coalition with the Tories. Such coalitions tend to morph into dictatorships. My point here is that no group should be allowed to stand for election who wish to remove, violate or rig democracy for their own ends. Look what happened in Zimbabwe, where a senile permanent dictator with racist views has run the country for several decades, to the great detriment of the vast majority of the population.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me–and there was no one left to speak for me.’
